Base24 Design Systems offers an alternative to traditional timepiece designs by integrating light, form, space and regularly programmed movement to express the passage of time.

The linear time column was designed to provide time information using an evenly progressive analog movement of light along a linear framework. The sculptures are void of numbers or graphic symbols. The time information is conveyed only by the regular progression of hue and form relationships over a 24 hour cycle.

The Time Column sculptures are an attempt to suspend traditional thinking of time telling by reconfiguring the space that has been represented by the analog clock face into a linear form in the manner that a burning candle expresses elapsed time.

The imagery of gradually altering light in the arcing movement of the sun and the resultant effect on atmosphere of shifting colors were design elements I wanted to incorporate within a simplified linear space providing time information only as a secondary reading.
The sculptures were not to be obvious timepieces but were to provide a gentle, evolving harmonic visual with a predictable regularity of movement. Within this regular scalar framework one can retrieve elapsed time information.

These systems can be adapted to custom interior or exterior architectural applications and depending on their scale and placement, can stand alone as focal points in public spaces or meld quietly into structural surfaces.
